The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MoFAD) focuses its efforts on implementing development interventions aimed at strengthening the fisheries and aquaculture sectors to more effectively contribute to Ghana's overall development. MoFAD has an Inland Fisheries Management and Aquaculture Division, as well as an Aquatic Health Unit, responsible for coordinating aquaculture and fish farming activities across Ghana’s 16 regions. The Fisheries Commission is MoFAD’s implementing agency, established as the operational unit responsible for enforcing the Ministry’s policies and regulations. It oversees all monitoring, control, surveillance, evaluation, and compliance functions related to fisheries development and management in Ghana, including fish health, post-harvest activities, safety, and quality assurance. Trained aquaculture and fish health specialists provide expert services. Additionally, MoFAD operates a state-of-the-art national aquaculture training center, commercial farms utilizing RAS technology for farmer training, a fish health laboratory for disease diagnostics, and two aquaculture demonstration centers for seed and feed trials.
MoFAD in ACUICONECTA: MoFAD will coordinate and support the organization and implementation of training activities and interventions planned by program beneficiaries in Ghana, focused on the transfer of protocols and technologies developed within the project for the establishment of sustainable aquaculture, in line with R&D guidelines defined by MoFAD. These actions will include the improvement of existing aquaculture facilities through strategies to maximize biomass productivity and reduce disease outbreaks, the optimization of local aquafeed production through better formulation and reduced production costs, and the establishment of marine aquaculture systems, with a focus on designing pilot hatcheries.
