The Regional Directorate for Fisheries and the Sea is responsible for developing and implementing the Regional Government of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM)’s strategy for the sea, by drafting, proposing, and coordinating the regional maritime policy in RAM. This includes the enhancement and sustainability of marine resources, aquaculture, artificial reefs, exploration, preservation, and marine research, seabed management, licensing of maritime uses and activities, and coordination with the National Maritime Authority System. Its competencies in aquaculture focus on improving egg quality and the farming of marine invertebrates, developing new production systems, and integrating new species. It also participates in the assessment of new sustainable ingredients for marine species feed, as part of the local Blue and Circular Economy strategy.
The Regional Directorate for Fisheries and the Sea in ACUICONECTA: the Directorate will support the development of the studies planned within ACUICONECTA, making the infrastructure of the Calheta Mariculture Center (CMC) available to the scientific consortium for pilot farming trials of low-trophic marine species and other target aquaculture species of commercial interest. The Direção Regional do Mar will also participate in collaborative efforts under Specific Objective 3 of ACUICONECTA, contributing its experience and knowledge in forums and events aimed at strengthening connections between different aquaculture sector actors and stakeholders. It will assist in guiding private companies and aquaculture research centers in understanding and interpreting existing regulations, thereby facilitating the implementation of new initiatives and supporting sector development in harmony with the environment.
