The Society for the Economic Promotion of Gran Canaria (hereinafter: SPEGC) is the entity through which the Island Council of Gran Canaria channels its efforts to create new economic development opportunities on the island of Gran Canaria. Its mission focuses on job creation and generating economic and social value by creating a favorable investment environment and promoting innovation within the local productive sector. Its main instruments of action include innovation, business growth, support for entrepreneurs, and the attraction of investments, companies, and professionals. Through public investments, SPEGC acts as a driving force to improve Gran Canaria's competitiveness, providing infrastructure and services that boost sectors with growth potential. Since 2015, SPEGC has promoted and led the BIOASIS initiative, which brings together a series of actions aimed at developing Blue Biotechnology and Aquaculture by fostering experimental research and supporting business development in the sector. One of the key components of this initiative is the launch of the High Technology Incubator in Blue Biotechnology and Aquaculture (IAT), aimed at supporting early-stage aquaculture business projects looking to establish themselves on the island.
SPEGC in ACUICONECTA: as the instrumental body of the Island Council of Gran Canaria for economic promotion and as leader of the BIOASIS initiative and the High Technology Incubator in Blue Biotechnology and Aquaculture, SPEGC will support the resolution of legislative and administrative bottlenecks for the incubation and establishment of aquaculture companies. It will participate in drafting guides and providing advisory services for setting up aquaculture enterprises and identifying funding opportunities for businesses within the cooperation area. It will also promote applied research activities in aquaculture in experimental environments, supporting the development and implementation of strategies and best practices for managing and operating experimental aquaculture settings (such as public-private technology incubators and accelerators, regulatory testbeds, and Technological Free Zones). Leveraging its capacity to promote and accelerate the integration of new knowledge into the productive sector, SPEGC will assist the Lead Partner in ensuring the involvement of all stakeholders in the aquaculture sector and facilitating their access to research outcomes. It will participate in forums, events, and training workshops. Finally, it will contribute to the creation of the SH.A.PL.A. (Sharing Aquaculture Platform in the eastern Atlantic).
