ULPGC carries out cutting-edge research in marine topics and has developed strong research capacity in Marine Sciences, identified as a priority area in its smart specialization strategy. Synergy has been established among several research groups at ULPGC, particularly within the University Institute of Sustainable Aquaculture and Marine Ecosystems (IU-ECOAQUA). This research center promotes research, innovation, and postgraduate training in the conservation and sustainable use of coastal resources and the development of aquaculture. One of the IU-ECOAQUA research groups is the Aquaculture Research Group (GIA), which has extensive experience in aquaculture research and innovation through the implementation of national and international R&D&I projects. The research strategies developed by GIA have generated scientific and technical knowledge aimed at the sustainable development of aquaculture activities, improved production of various economically important species, the development of cutting-edge marine aquaculture infrastructure, the promotion of training and capacity-building programs, and the strengthening of education programs at different levels. Its training environment and close ties to industry enable the development of an innovative and environmentally responsible aquaculture sector with an ecosystem-based approach, while also promoting future employment opportunities in this field.
ULPGC in ACUICONECTA: GIA is a key actor in the proposal, contributing to all project objectives through core activities that will enable: the diversification of aquaculture production; the development of innovative production methods adapted to different aquaculture environments and species; increased resilience and sustainability of aquaculture processes through nutrition research; the development of new technologies to improve monitoring processes; the promotion of integrated production systems that support circularity; and contributions to addressing climate change challenges for the production of different species. Within the actions of Objective 3, GIA will play a significant role by promoting new aquaculture products and supporting their integration into the value chain, expanding the "Guide for the establishment of aquaculture enterprises" (THINKINAZUL capitalization); consolidating a scientific and technological ecosystem to facilitate knowledge transfer and public outreach through the creation of the SH.A.PL.A. platform (Sharing Aquaculture Platform in the eastern Atlantic); supporting the implementation of Sandboxes (regulatory testbeds) and Technological Free Zones (ZLT); and training students and educators in the innovative techniques developed within the project.
