The Technological Institute of the Canary Islands (ITC), through its Biotechnology Department, participated on Friday, September 26, in MacaroNight 2025, held at the Elder Museum of Science and Technology in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. This science outreach event, which commemorates the European Researchers’ Night, takes place simultaneously in the Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Azores, aiming to bring science closer to society, inspire scientific vocations, and demonstrate the real impact of research on everyday life.
Within this framework, the ITC presented the ACUICONECTA project, a cooperative initiative that promotes the development of sustainable plant-based aquaculture in ultra-peripheral regions and African countries, fostering knowledge transfer and responsible use of marine resources.

Scientific route at the Elder Museum: An outreach stand where school groups learned firsthand how microalgae research contributes to new applications in food, agriculture, aquaculture, and high-value bioproducts. The activity was led by Romualdo Bentor and Monserrat Alemán, ITC researchers.

“Science on Stage” space: Researcher Begoña Bustamante delivered a short talk explaining the goals and progress of ACUICONECTA, highlighting how the project seeks to diversify the blue economy and promote a sustainable development model in the central Atlantic.
In this way, ACUICONECTA stood out as an example of how applied microalgae biotechnology research can become a driver of innovation, international cooperation, and sustainable solutions for current environmental and socioeconomic challenges.
