The University of La Laguna (ULL) and the Canary Islands Institute of Technology (ITC) recently collaborated on a scientific outreach initiative aimed at students of the Master’s Degree in Marine Biology: Biodiversity and Conservation. The objective was to present the goals and some preliminary results of the ACUICONECTA project, bringing students closer to research and innovation opportunities in the field of sustainable aquaculture.
The session took place on March 6, 2026, at the Faculty of Science (Section: Biology) of the University of La Laguna, within the framework of the course “Sustainable Aquaculture”, taught and coordinated by Dr. Covadonga Rodríguez, Professor of Zoology at ULL. In addition to lectures and laboratory practical sessions, this course includes a series of seminars with invited experts from different academic institutions and companies. These seminars allow students to explore a wide range of potential career paths and applications related to marine biology and aquaculture.
On this occasion, the session featured Dr. Marianna Venuleo, head of section and researcher at the ITC, who delivered the talk entitled “Sustainable Algae Aquaculture: Challenges and Advances in Algae Production” During her presentation, she introduced the objectives of the ACUICONECTA project and explained the main research lines currently being developed within the project. Some preliminary results were also presented, and the role of technological innovation and institutional collaboration in promoting more sustainable and efficient aquaculture systems was discussed.
The activity generated considerable interest among the students, who had the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with the development of new sustainable aquaculture production strategies. This type of initiative helps strengthen the links between research, university education, and the productive sector, facilitating knowledge transfer and fostering scientific and professional vocations in strategic areas such as sustainable aquaculture.
